Description
In order to speed up the charging time and provide continuous charging, the smart charger tries to detect the state of charge and condition of the battery and uses a 3-stage charging scheme. The following description assumes that the sealed lead-acid traction batteries are at 25°C. The xxx stage is called "bulk absorption"; the charging current will remain high and constant and is limited by the capacity of the charger. When the voltage on the battery reaches its discharge voltage (2.22 volts per cell), the charger switches to the second stage, where the voltage remains constant (2.40 volts per cell). The current delivered will drop at the holding voltage, and when the current falls below 0.005C, the charger moves to Stage 3, where the charger output will remain constant at 2.25 volts per cell. During the third stage, the charging current is very small, 0.005C, and at this voltage, the batteries can remain fully charged and compensate for self-discharge.
