A simple charger works by providing a constant DC or pulsed DC power supply to a battery that is being charged. A simple charger usually does not change its output based on charge time or battery level. This simplicity means that simple chargers are inexpensive, but there are trade-offs. As long as the ripple current is not too high (more than 3 to 4 times the battery manufacturer's recommended level), the expected life of a ripple-charged valve-regulated sealed lead-acid battery will be within 3% of the life of a constant DC-charged battery.
