Correct evaluation of the power adapter and charger quality indicators, should be a long life, safe and reliable, the output parameters up to standard as the main principle, in the output electrical performance parameters in line with the requirements of the use of electronic equipment, under the conditions, in order to consider the power adapter in the different operating environments and emergency situations safe and normal work, we must be additional to the design of power adapters with a variety of functions of the protection circuit. The protection circuit of switching power adapter can be divided into power internal protection and power external protection. Chip internal protection circuits, such as power device overheating protection circuit, anti-voltage and current buffer circuits, shutdown/auto restart circuits, overcurrent protection circuits, etc.; external protection circuits, mainly including output overvoltage protection circuits, input undervoltage protection circuits, output overcurrent protection, startup current limiting protection circuits, soft-start circuits, EMI filters, leakage clamp protection circuits and so on. Switching power adapter protection circuits and programs have a variety of structures, to fully consider the use of national and regional power grid environment, to select the appropriate protection circuit and program structure, so that the protection circuit can play its function.
I. The internal protection circuit of the power charger:
1. undervoltage lockout circuit - before the power adapter normal output voltage and current, so that the IC chip ready to work.
2. Programmable state controller --- realizes the mutual transition between working state and standby state through manual control, microcontroller operation, digital circuit control, and prohibited operation.
3. Over-current protection circuit --- Limit the maximum working current of power MOS tube to avoid breakdown of power MOS tube.
4. shutdown/automatic restart circuit---when the circuit is out of control, the power supply can be restarted to resume normal operation.
5. overheating protection circuit --- when the power semiconductor or IC chip temperature exceeds the maximum operating temperature of the chip, the circuit is in resonance, does not work, turn off the output of the power supply, so that the temperature falls down and then continue to work, it is self-recovery.
Second, the external protection circuit of the power charger:
1. output over-voltage protection circuit - the use of thyristor (SCR) or voltage regulator to limit the output voltage does not exceed the set rated value.
2. EMI filter --- Suppresses electromagnetic interference brought from the utility grid, and suppresses interference generated by the power supply charger itself, suppresses internal interference that would be transmitted externally through the power cord and bring interference to other electronic devices.
3. output short circuit protection circuit --- when the load electronic equipment circuit abnormalities, the power charger into the resonance state, shutdown does not work, to prevent further expansion of the damage to electronic equipment, to avoid fire and other major accidents.
4. start current limiting protection circuit --- use soft start power components to buffer attenuation of the instantaneous charging current of the input rectifier and filtering circuits.
5. Drain clamp protection circuit --- Absorb the spike voltage generated by the drain, the drain-source voltage of the MOSFET power switching tube to play the role of clamping, to avoid instantaneous high pulse voltage damage to the switching power supply power switching tubes.
6. Over-current protection devices - such as fuse tubes, self-recovery fuse tubes, fusing resistors. When the input current of the switching power supply exceeds the rated value, cut off the input circuit. Or when the output current of the switching power supply exceeds the rated value, the power supply automatically cuts off to protect the equipment.
7. soft-start circuit --- use the soft-start capacitor to make the output voltage rise smoothly when it is just powered on. 8. input under-voltage protection circuit --- use the feedback winding of the opto-coupler or the high-frequency transformer to carry out feedback control and realize under-voltage protection when the input voltage is too low.
8. ESD protection circuit---Prevent damage to key semiconductor IC components due to human electrostatic discharge (ESD).
9. Heatsinks---Apply suitable metal heatsinks to semiconductor IC chips, power switching tubes and output rectifiers to prevent overheating protection or damage to the chips due to long-term overheating. Heat sinks are mostly made of copper material, which is much better than aluminum plates for heat dissipation.
