Smart Charger Factory Direct

A charger, is used to put energy into a secondary battery or equipment for rechargeable batteries by forcing current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for example, how long to charge for and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of...

Description

A "smart charger" should not be confused with a "smart battery". A smart battery is usually defined as a battery containing some sort of electronic device or "chip" that can communicate with a smart charger about the characteristics and condition of the battery. A smart battery typically requires a smart charger that can communicate with it (see Smart Battery Data). A smart charger is defined as a charger that responds to the condition of the battery and modifies its charging action accordingly.

Some smart chargers are designed to charge:

"Smart" batteries with internal protection or supervisory or management circuitry.
"Dumb" batteries, which do not have any internal electronic circuitry.
The output current of a smart charger depends on the state of the battery. A smart charger monitors the battery's voltage, temperature, or charge time to determine the optimal charge current and terminate charging.

For NiCd and NiMH batteries, the voltage across the battery terminals slowly increases during the charging process until the battery is fully charged. After that, the voltage drops, indicating to the smart charger that the battery is fully charged. Such chargers are often labeled as ΔV, "delta-V" or sometimes called "deltapeak" chargers, indicating that they monitor voltage changes.

The problem is that the size of the "delta-V" can become very small or even non-existent when charging (very) high capacity rechargeable batteries. This can result in even a smart battery charger not sensing that the battery is actually fully charged and continuing to charge. In some cases this can lead to overcharging the battery. However, many so-called smart chargers utilize a combination of disconnect systems designed to prevent overcharging in the vast majority of cases.

A typical smart charger can quickly charge a battery to 85% of its xxx capacity in less than an hour, then switch to trickle charging, which takes several hours to fully charge the battery.
