What is a PD charger?

Apr 21, 2021

After the popularization of fast charging technology, many people are using fast charging chargers to charge their mobile phones. In order to distinguish them from traditional USB chargers, many times they will be heard calling them USB-C chargers, PD chargers, or It is TYPE-C chargers. In fact, these three names all represent the same fast-charging charger. We can collectively call it PD charger. The PD charger is a fast-charging charger, but not all fast charging is PD.

The PD charger generally refers to a charger that complies with the PD fast charging protocol. And because the PD protocol is often bundled with the TYPE-C interface, some people call it the TYPE-C charger. In addition to PD fast charging, there are Qualcomm's QC fast charging, MediaTek's PE, and various fast charging made by major mobile phone manufacturers.

Compared with ordinary chargers, PD chargers have two major characteristics: one is to realize high efficiency of power management; the other is to realize flexible adaptive adjustment according to the power transmission protocol. With the same charger, different voltage/current schemes are set to achieve flexible adjustment, which can effectively manage the power supply and protect the battery while realizing fast charging.

The difference from other fast-charge chargers is that the PD fast-charge standard matched with the TYPE-C interface can withstand a large current of 3A or 5A. According to different voltages, the maximum transmission power can reach 100W. Such a large power is what other fast chargers have.

Now notebooks have basically adopted the TYPE-C interface and PD fast charge protocol, and now Qualcomm's QC fast charge has begun to compromise with PD. With the further popularization of the TYPE-C interface, perhaps the PD charger will be your only charger in the future.
